Certified Instructor Course

What is the Dog Obedience Guidance Systems of Australia (D.O.G.S)?
It is a division of Command Dog Training School (Vic.) Pty Ltd tasked with the development of Computer Data Base Management Systems specific to the dog training industry, conducting Certified Instructor Courses for members of the public, Canine Management Workshops for Animal Management Officers and Quality Assurance Accreditation (QA) to the dog training industry. The Training Director Basil Theofanides is a Nationally Accredited Trainer by the Official Government Accreditation Authority.

OBJECTIVES:
To train selected handlers in correct instructional techniques of Dog Obedience Training and to qualify those handlers as Certified Instructors within a five month period. At the conclusion of the course it is expected that each Student Trainer will be qualified and consequently able to Instruct classes or individuals in Dog Obedience.

Student Trainers will be continually assessed throughout the course on their competency for both practical & theoretical, by Basil Theofanides (Training Director) and the respective Senior Instructors they will be training under. Furthermore there will be written, verbal and practical testing to be completed by each Student Trainer. Students must be prepared to commit to at least 80 hours of their time to successfully complete this intensive program.

Who is this course for?
1. Individuals who desire to become self-employed either full or part-time, in the professional dog training industry. OR Individuals who wish to further their personal development through the art of training dogs and instructing people. Further, it is ideal for obedience club trainers and instructors. The course is conducted part-time over 5 months. Full time courses are available on application.

Practical Training
Students must complete a minimum of 40 hours practical training with a qualified Instructor at one of Command Dog Training School's venues. This will entail attendance on either a Saturday day for 1-2 hours, a Wednesday evening for 1-2 hours or a combination of either days. Furthermore, students will need to provide an untrained dog for participation in a Basic Obedience program as part of their practical training requirements. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is accepted only if it is within the course's philosophy & guidelines.

Lecture Nights Key Speaker: Basil Theofanides - (Nationally Accredited Trainer by the Official Government Accreditation Authority).
These evenings will be conducted during nominated weeknights (or weekdays if suitable) and will run for approximately 2 hours at a time. Students must attend all prescribed lecture nights.

Key Lecture: Which Dog Bites?

This lecture was adapted from Basil Theofanides' lecture "Dealing With Aggressive Dogs in The Boarding Kennel" for the Pet Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC). It has been presented to numerous Councils' By-Laws officers and to members of the AAPDT (Australian Association of Professional Dog Trainers Inc.)

This audio-visual presentation provides an invaluable insight for dog trainers as to the various types of aggression seen in dogs, how to recognise it and the means to deal with it. Basil Theofanides will illustrate cases in point through anecdotes and there will be plenty of opportunity to share experiences by discussion at the conclusion of the presentation. Notes will be provided and a certificate of attendance will be given to all participants.

Basic Canine Husbandry

Dr. David Margery B.V.Sc. (Hons) Melb. conducts this informative lecture. Students will learn the fundamentals of canine husbandry. Includes diet & nutrition & common parasitic infestations.

Basic Canine Care

Jodi-Anne Stewart qualified Dog Groomer, trainer & PIJAC director, runs her successful dog grooming business Pet Perfection. Jodi-Anne will conduct a lecture on basic canine care. Includes basic grooming, coat maintanance, ears & nails and some tricks of the trade.

Assignments

All students will be required to complete a 5,000 word essay on a related topic. Essay topics will be drawn during a lecture evening.

Texts

All students will be required to read at least 3 prescribed texts during the course. A limited number of texts are available for loan for this purpose.

First Lesson Presentation Assessment

Each student will be required to prepare and present a first lesson to the other members of the course. This will require each student to provide a dog on the day for this purpose.

Students will be assessed on their competency to deliver the session.

Written Tests

Students will be required to sit for three written tests during the course.

Oral Tests
Students will be required to sit for at least one Oral Test.

Pass Mark

All students must pass with a minimum of 75% to gain certification. If a student is required to undergo further practical training, the Course Instructor will advise and arrange

Certification

On successful completion, student trainers will be presented with a Certificate of Completion by D.O.G.S. of Australia. Graduates will also have the opportunity to participate in other workshops that D.O.G.S of Australia may periodically conduct through Command Dog Training School. Furthermore, accreditation with the AAPDT (Australian Association of Professional Dog Trainers Inc.) is available on successful completion.
